International Breast Implant Check Clinic (IBICC)
(Member of “Integrated Breast Healthcare”)
Are you concerned about your follow up or your implants?
All women with breast implants should have ongoing breast checks for life.
We know that there are medium to long-term risks associated with breast implants that need to be monitored. It is therefore recommended that all patients are seen for a breast implant check on an annual basis.
Recommendations
Here are some initial steps that we recommend you to follow.
- 1. Contact your original surgeon
Your surgeon will have all the relevant details for your procedure and will be the best person to perform an examination and/or organize further investigations if required.
- If you are unable or do not desire to contact your original surgeon
No matter where you had your previous surgery performed, or by whom, you can book an appointment for a primary breast implant checkup at the International Breast Implant Check Clinic (IBICC) in Stockholm, Sweden. We provide a consultation with one of our highly experienced board certificated senior plastic surgeons specialized in breast surgery, including anamnesis, a physical examination and ultrasound of your breasts.

More information
We’re pleased to share with you that breast implant screening is now available at the International Breast Implant Check Clinic in Stockholm. You’ll have a private consultation with an experienced doctor – and access to an ultrasound scan.
We’re completely devoted to providing the very best care. And the safety of breast implant surgery is something that we’ve been concerned about for a very long time. Breast implants have been associated with a range of problems – including rupture, leak, and capsular contracture and a rare breast implant related lymphoma. You can read about the history of breast implants, in a recent paper published by the ISHC Research and Education Foundation here.
And the risk increases with time – recent research suggests that women with breast implants should receive lifelong check-ups. Often, women receive check-ups with their surgeon for a few years after their surgery, and then not at all. Women should be checked regularly, and the Integrated Breast Health Clinic helps women access this service conveniently, and at a low cost.
The International Breast Implant Check Clinic also provides a safe environment for women who are concerned about their recent surgery. Unfortunately, breast implant surgery isn’t properly regulated, and some women experience poorly performed surgery – with serious consequences. In this case, going back to the surgeon isn’t a safe option. Our Clinic provides a safe, confidential and comfortable environment.

Medical Conditions & Treatments

Leaks, Ruptures, Capsules and “Double Bubble”
The use of breast implants carries the risks of implant leak, rupture and capsular contracture. Ruptured silicone breast implants can cause breast pain or changes in the shape of the breast. Double bubble occurs when a breast implant shifts down into the breast crease.
If you experience symptoms such as pain, soreness or swelling, lumps, or softening or hardening of the affected breast, you should see your doctor immediately. We now recommend that all women with breast implants should be checked regularly
BIA- ALCL
Breast Implant-Associated (BIA-ALCL) is a rare lymphoma associated with breast implants. The incidence of BIA-ALCL is between 1 in 3000 and 1 in 80000. There are around 800 cases worldwide; however the numbers keep on changing. Considering the number of implants going into patients, the risk is small. It is more closely associated with textured implants.
BIA-ALCL occurs on average 8 years after implant placement and presents commonly as large fluid filled swelling around the implant (seroma). Less commonly, it can cause a lump around the breast implant.
The Etiology is not clear however it indicates that BIA-ALCL is a multi factorial disease, where personal genetics play a role and there is some evidence pointing to bacterial infection as possible cause. It is important to get checked regularly and to know that this lymphoma is treatable by removal of the implant and surrounding capsule if caught early.
“Breast Implant Illness”
“Breast Implant Illness” (BII) is a patient-reported condition with several symptoms such as general fatigue, hair loss, modified body odor, general body pain, depression, painful breasts, itching of the breasts, redness of the breasts, irritable bowel syndrome, endocrinological conditions, palpitations and autoimmune diseases including rheumatology, SLE, myalgia, artralgia and Raynaud’s disease. More than 100 different symptoms are patient reported and intensely discussed in Facebook groups and in other forums on social media. The medical profession has been working intensively over the past 60 years to understand the mechanisms of the concerns and side effects of the above patients related to breast implants.
At the Victoriakliniken we take these concerns seriously and listen to patients with concerns about BII and share our objective, evidence-based knowledge. There are currently no diagnostic tests available for BII. Data in the literature does not support the hypothesis that breast implants cause autoimmune diseases. So far, there is no evidence that the withdrawal of breast implants guarantees a long-term symptom-free life. Future studies, which can draw conclusions from a huge amount of merged data from different breast implant registries, will be able to respond better to questions about the long-term results of removing the implants.
We respect and support women’s desire to take out their breast implants after having received relevant information. The decision to undergo breast augmentation for aesthetic reasons, or to do a breast reconstruction, should be taken by a well-informed patient. Similarly, a decision to remove the implants should also be well founded, and taken by an equally well-informed patient.
Instant access to the right specialist
