What should you consider when choosing a surgeon or clinic?

First and foremost, you should consider what you want to do and – why. Are you undergoing the procedure for your own sake? Are you completely sure that you truly want to go through with it? Surgery always carries some risk, regardless of how skilled the surgeons are or how healthy the patient is.
Therefore, it is important to think through your decision carefully. If you have come this far, meaning you are reading this text, you have probably already made considerable progress in your thought process, but it never hurts to reconsider your decision further. Once you have decided to proceed with a procedure, there are many different aspects to consider when choosing a clinic.

Below is a list of things that we believe are important to investigate and consider:

• First and foremost: Does the surgeon and the rest of the medical staff have the right qualifications? Are they all licensed and specialized in plastic surgery, to begin with? But most importantly: How much experience does the surgeon have, and how many surgeries have they performed related to the procedure you desire? Can the surgeon show before-and-after pictures with long-term follow-up?
• What guarantees and follow-up care does the clinic offer?
• Does the clinic have a good reputation? Google reviews, check Reco, look at before-and-after pictures, and ask around in your network. You can also contact the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen) to find out if there are any complaints or reports against a clinic/plastic surgeon.
• Make sure you are well-informed about the risks and complications. A reputable clinic will carefully inform you about these and will often present such information on their website as well.
• What does the aftercare look like? Will you stay overnight? Can you have direct contact with your plastic surgeon after returning home? A good clinic experiences few complications and therefore has no problem offering free corrections and long, extensive follow-up care for you as a patient. In other words, this can be a good indicator of the clinic’s quality.
• Also, carefully consider your wishes and expectations for the result. Similarly, think about the entire process – from the initial consultation to aftercare and follow-up.
